Where should you start with home insulation?

A practical way to prioritise loft, wall and floor improvements for your West London home.

Start with the building, not the product

Before choosing insulation, understand where your home is losing heat. Your loft, external walls and ground floor may all offer opportunities, but access, construction and existing condition determine which measures are suitable. An assessment helps you prioritise work instead of treating every property in the same way.

Check your loft first

If you have an unconverted loft, find out whether insulation is already present and whether it is evenly installed. Storage boards, services and ventilation need consideration. A top-up may be possible, but the correct approach depends on the existing installation.

Understand your wall construction

Cavity walls and solid walls need different solutions. Cavity insulation is not automatically suitable for every cavity, and external wall insulation needs careful detailing and preparation. Ask the surveyor to explain the wall type and the reasons for the recommendation.

Plan improvements together

Insulation and heating influence one another. Improving the building fabric can change its heating requirements. Tell your installer about planned roof works, extensions or heating changes so the sequence of work makes sense.

Your next step

Contact RJM with your postcode, property type and the rooms that feel difficult to heat. We can discuss the appropriate service and what needs checking before a recommendation is made.

Think about access and everyday disruption

Before an insulation survey, consider how the installer will reach the loft, walls or floor. Tell the team about stored belongings, fitted furniture and rooms that need to stay usable. Ask which preparations you should make yourself and what making good is included. A clear scope makes it easier to compare quotations and plan around family life.

Do not overlook ventilation or existing defects

Tell the surveyor about leaks, damp patches or condensation. Insulation needs to be considered alongside the condition of the building and its ventilation. An upgrade should not simply cover an unresolved problem. Ask how the proposed work will account for these issues and whether other repairs need to happen first.
